While watching the XGames on ESPN tonight...

I got inspired to sketch this up.

I have come to the sad realization that I will never compete in the XGames, but boy howdy do I enjoy watching them. Such an amazing group of graceful athletes doing things that I couldn't have come close to doing in my late teens/early twenties.

One more day of the Winter XGames, and then it's just a matter of waiting until the Summer ones roll around later this year!

You can't slow down technology.

I was having a conversation with one of the guys I host my weekly podcast with, and we got on the subject of how rapidly technology seems to be advancing. It seems like within the last 10 years or so, the rate at which new gadgets and widgets are being released, refined and reduced in size has pretty much broken the needle.

I have no idea if that's what inspired the above sketch or not, but I figured I'd share it anyway.

He doesn't look healthy. (sketch)

This guy has seen better days for sure.

Hey buddy... why so blue?

HA!

I got nothing.

Constipated Cowboys and Heatwaves

Seattle is in the midst of a heatwave. I tell you this because today is also the day that the "Chiller" (their term not mine) that keeps the server room cool here at work decided to crap out. Near 100 degree weather plus no AC in the server room means that we almost had the sprinkler system start spraying due to the heat in that room. They shut it down, and all of the licenses for programs like Maya that were contained on the server went with it.

Why should you care?

You really shouldn't, but since I had some downtime, I started sketching and the result is below.

I like to think of him as a constipated Toby Keith, but then that forces me to think of a constipated Toby Keith, and that's pretty gross.

Sketch Dump

I hadn't just sat down and sketched in a few weeks, so I decided to shake the cobwebs off.

It felt good to sketch... I need to do it more often!

Dragon Ass

I just wanted to toss this sketch up onto the site, since it sort of highlights some of my workflow when creating an illustration.

On the far left, you'll see my roughest sketch, which I draw first to get the layout of the image all setup. The dragon, which is still in blue, is the next phase, where I clean up the rough sketch. The people on either side of the dragon are in black, which means they are "inked" and ready to be colored.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

Funny Heads

If you're like me, you can never have too many funny heads laying around.

Take care!

Married Couple

I've been drawing these two for a while now, and thought I'd post a few more quickies.

I used to draw a comic strip back in the day, and I'd love to do one about these two fine folks one day, but I just don't have the time right now.

Bird Sketches

Not sure if this will turn into anything or not, but I do have a rough plan for this little guy...

He'll probably just wind up crapping on my freshly-washed car.

We have a blogger down!

Update: Looks like they fixed the problem!

Original Post:

I was going to post up a quick sketch dump last night, but my images wouldn't upload. I tried it again this morning and still no luck. So I hit the Blogger forum and found out that Blogger/Google are currently having problems with uploading images in blogs. I hope that they're working on it, as not having images to post are going to make blogs like this one even more boring than they already are.

So in the meantime, you can see the sketch page I was going to post by clicking this awesome text link.

Hopefully they get this sorted out soon and I can go back to my normal format.

Take care!

Recognize That Elephant?

I hope so, because if not... I need to go back and take some drawing classes!

I'm really thinking about taking this sketch to the next level, which means I need to buy it a promissory ring and let it start keeping its toothbrush at my house or something.

Or I might just color it and add a background...

A Boy and His Blob

Who hasn't always wanted their own blob?

I once had a wad... but it wasn't nearly as cool as my friends' blobs. It was all my parents could afford.

Just some guy...

Meet Hud. Yes, that's right... Hud.

He seems harmless, but just try saying something bad about Jethro Tull.

A Dip and His Dog

So I figured if I had been drawing the couple in the last post so much, I should probably give them a dog.

Every randomly sketched couple needs a good companion to wait for them when they come home to their randomly sketched homes at night after a long day at their randomly sketched jobs.

Who are these people?

I don't know myself, but I've been drawing them a lot lately...

Maybe I'll do something with them down the road... or maybe not.

In either case, they're a hoot to draw!

Just some random sketches I doodled out on the ol' Cintique tonight while I listened to some music.

Hooray for sketch dumps!

Chuck the Dog

My Mom has a dog named, Charlie, who we call "Chuck" for short.

My three dogs hate him, and pick on him to no end each time he visits our house. Guess I felt bad and figured I'd sketch him to make up for it.

Sketch Dump!

Just a quick page of sketches.

I actually hadn't sketched anything since my son was born back in December, and it felt good to shake some of the dust off of the ol' wrist.

Look for a (very late) Dog Complex Christmas strip sometime in February! I started it back in October, so it's time I get that sucker finished.

A Man and His Slime Creature

Just started with shapes on this one, and it took on a life of its own.

I'm happy with how it turned out, but I really need to get much better with my shading, so don't look too closely!

Sketch-a-rola!

No idea what the title means... here are some sketches.

I'm really getting a feel for the Cintiq now, and like it more and more with each stroke.

That one guy totally looks like a banana.

Hands and Some Guy

Started sketching hands tonight during the AM lecture on... of all things... hand gestures.

Somewhere along the way, the wheels fell off and I started drawing some guy who looks like he's straight out of "Citizen Dog."

And yes... I'm aware his left arm is far too long.

One More Cintiq Sketch

Thought I'd throw this sucker up too.

It's going to take me a few months to really get the feel of the Cintiq down, but I am already really excited about how easy it is to use.

I should mention that this sketch was inspired by a recent drawing over at Creature Box. Thanks again to Dave for the advice on the Cintiq!

Don't Call It A Toy!

The sketches you see below aren't that special at all, save for one major detail. Can you guess what it is?

They were all created with my brand new Wacom Cintiq tablet!

If you haven't seen these bad boys, they're basically an LCD screen that allows you to draw right on them. I've wanted one for ages, and I finally talked my wife into picking one up for me. She must have been drunk or something, because she also got me a copy of Sketchbook Pro, which is the program I used to "sketch" these images.

She asked me, "How do you like your new toy?" and I was quick to respond that this is so much more of an investment, as it will help me a great deal in my art gigs down the road.

She didn't buy that line either.

Nothing really special in these, just letting you know that I'm still alive!

More to come soon...
