A buddy and I were working on an Xbox Live Arcade game not long ago. This was as far as we got, but I think we both agree that, once I finish up AM, we're going to dive back in again.

I supplied all of the artwork short of the amazingly awesome mountains, but I think we'll start from scratch if we do fire it back up, because we've both learned some great lessons that would make it even better.

Take care!

GTA IV

I bought it, I played it, it gave me a cold. GTA IV is out now... in case you haven't heard.

Okay maybe it didn't give me a cold, but I did catch a cold the day I brought it home and since everything else gets blamed on the GTA series, I figured I'd lump my cold in there as well.

Let me first say that, for the most part, GTA IV has lived up to the hype. It's a solid, fun, and nice looking game.

That being said, it feels pretty much like every other GTA game I've played, albeit with a fresh coat of paint. I've had a couple of "OH WOW!" moments for sure, and overall I'd give the game a solid B+, but I'm worried that I may get bored with it too quickly. I have yet to try multiplayer though, which could keep me playing for years.

To all of you who have never played a GTA game, and are staying away due to all of the horrible things you've heard about it, let me just say this:

GTA IV is what you make of it.

Sure you're required to kill people as part of many of the missions, but 99.9% of the time, they are bad people who have little to no redeeming qualities. It isn't as though you're asked to take out an orphanage or bomb a school bus. Speaking of that, there are NO children in the game at all. I'm not saying that you're a noble soul in the game, but a good example is a mission where you have to go and rescue a mob boss' daughter from a gang of bikers that she's fallen in with. You wind up killing the bikers, but only after they shoot first.

I've also had at least one mission already where the game gave me the choice to kill a man or save his life. I saved him, but I'm wondering if that choice will come back to bite me later.

Can you kill old women in the game? Sure, but you don't have to. You're never forced to (at least I haven't been yet), but like in real life, you have the choice to do so and suffer the consequences.

I'm not making excuses for what is a brutal and violent game, I'm just saying that if you're staying away from GTA because you read on the interwebs that "the entire game centers around launching babies into buildings to make them crumble to the ground," give the game a shot. It's not what you think it is.

All this being said, my favorite moment from the game so far went like this:

I was on my way to pick up my girlfriend so that we could go bowling. I had no car, so I did what anyone in that situation would do and stepped in front of one driving down the street and pointed my gun at the driver. He refused to get out and even made some less-than-friendly comments about my person that I took offense to, so I shot him in the face. He then slumped forward onto the steering wheel (causing the horn to blare), and his lifeless body pressed down on the accelerator of his car. His car then ran me over, killing me, and the car knocked over a fire hydrant, which sprayed water into the air.

So there I was, dead in the street, having learned a valuable lesson that if you're going to shoot someone in the face, don't stand in front of their car when you do it.

Quick Forced Perspective Test

UPDATE: Along with cleaning up the animation a bit further, I went ahead and slapped some quick textures/colors on things and threw a few lights in the scene.

Click the image above to check it out, or the one below to see the original!

I wanted to try some forced perspective stuff out, so I whipped up a quick animation.

The file is pretty small, and you can click on the image to check it out.

Originally I just had the buildings get smaller in size towards the back of the shot, and when he jumped in the air, the building tops sort of framed him. Then I took it a step further and actually animated the buildings tilting in towards him as the camera rotated up. I'm not totally happy with the results, but I think it may have to do with how the buildings are moving.

It was a fun experiment, and one that I'll definitly give more thought to using in the future, but maybe in a more subtle way.

My Office At Work

I really have no good reason for posting this, but if you watch towards the end, you'll see some of my sketches pinned up on my wall.

This is my home away from home, and during our crunch time I spend more hours here on average than I do at my real home.

Just thought you might want to take a look inside and check out my awesome peanut butter!

Bourne Again

As an early birthday gift, two of my buddies took me out to see what the kids refer to as a "rock and roll show" last night. I don't have any pictures of the event yet (they're all on my buddy's camera), but I had a blast watching Australian rock band, Airbourne, as they ripped through a blistering set of music.

If you like bands like AC/DC, and you have yet to check out Airbourne, you really owe it to yourself to do so. My ears are still ringing today, due to the fact that they decided that a wall of Marshalls was just about right for a room the size of your average bathroom, but I had a blast.

At one point in the show, the lead singer/guitarist got down off the stage, walked through the crowd, hopped up onto the bar, and began to play a guitar solo. As he was doing this, he would grab bottles of booze from the bar raise them to the crowd, and then take swigs off of them. It was quite a site to behold, and I thought that it would be awesome to be in that position. I wouldn't stop there either... I'd grab a wad of cash from the register and raise it in the air to the roar of the crowd before stuffing it in my pocket. Then I'd go for the cheeseburgers and nachos.

When I get the pictures, I'll post a few here.

I like my mellow music just as much as the next guy, but I also have a soft spot in my heart for pure rock and roll and Airbourne is exactly what I need from time to time.

New Demo Reel!

I've got a new demo reel up if anyone would like to take a look. Here are a few thumbnails from it:

I can't seem to post it on YouTube without it going all "chop city" on me, with the playback making it almost unwatchable, so until I figure out what's going on, you'll have to settle for the 19.8 MB, high-res version.

Stick a fork in it!

I'm sure you're all tired of seeing the same animation again and again, but this should be the final one.

I could noodle on it for months, but I need to focus back on my AM short and get that all polished up, so I'm going to call this one good. I'm really proud of how it turned out in just 18 days, given that I was also working a full time job and doing the Animation Mentor stuff. Not only that, but I met some great new people, and learned a TON of stuff. So all in all it was an amazing experience.

Thanks for stopping by!

Almost Done

This one is very close to final, but still needs a few extra tweaks, so there will probably be one or two more updates that follow this one.

I had never entered The 11 Second Club competition before this month, and there are some kick ass animators who compete, so I didn't know what to expect going in. However everyone has been extremely supportive and helpful, and the experience has been nothing short of incredible.

I'm still not sure if I'll enter next month, since things have been crazy busy for me, but if I don't enter next month, I'll enter the following for sure.

Take care!

Ollie Johnston - RIP

In case you haven't heard the sad news...

Ollie Johnston, final surviving member of Disney's Nine Old Men, passed away yesterday at the age of 95.

I never met Mr. Johnston, nor have I ever taken a class or received advice directly from him, and yet he has taught me more about animation than anyone. I wouldn't be doing what I do today, were it not for Ollie and the greats of the Animation industry blazing the trail that they did.

A year or so back, I had actually talked my wife into agreeing that if our first child turned out to be twin boys, we would name them Frank and Ollie. Now my son is four months old, and we often joke about if he would have been Frank or if he would have been Ollie. He seems to love trains though, so I lean towards Ollie.

For more on Mr. Johnston's passing, please visit the link at Cartoon Brew below.

Thank you for making me laugh as a kid and an adult, Ollie, and I can't wait for my son to get old enough that I can share your wonderful work with him as well.

My weekend and my WIP

So this weekend we had a strange weather pattern move in and give us one day of 85 degree weather before dropping by close to 20 degrees (with rain) the following day. We don't get a lot of sun as it is in the Seattle area, so I figured I had better take the opportunity while it was there and get out for some sun.

Between my 11 Second Club work for this month (more on that later), and my Animation Mentor work, along with my regular job and two freelance art gigs, it was tough to break away and just relax. However just a few minutes into the walk with my wife and son, and my in-laws who were visiting from out of town, I had totally forgotten about animation for a bit. Did you know there are actually other people outside? Some of them are actually quite friendly even. I had also totally forgotten about these things they call trees... quite stunning.

After a three hour walk though, I was ready to get out of the sun for a bit, and dive back into some animation. Later that evening we had a huge family gathering where we ate lasagna and cheesecake, and hung around in my backyard, so I got a double-dose of outdoors, which was awesome.

So that was my non-animation weekend, but I still managed to get my AM work handed in, as well as add a bunch of stuff to my 11 Second Club animation, which you'll see below. I'd call this a Polish 1 pass, which feels good, since I've still got two weeks to finish it up. I also added in some posters, which you'll actually be able to read in the final render, and a few other odds and ends.

As always, let me know what you think!

April 11 Second Club Update (Block/Spline)

The animation is now sitting comfortably between blocking and full spline, with the ending being in pretty rough shape right now.

Lots of work to do, and I hope that the texture that I chose for the dentist's skin isn't too dark.

Recognize That Elephant?

I hope so, because if not... I need to go back and take some drawing classes!

I'm really thinking about taking this sketch to the next level, which means I need to buy it a promissory ring and let it start keeping its toothbrush at my house or something.

Or I might just color it and add a background...

Here is my entry for the April 11 Second Club Competition with some added blocking and some rough facial animation.

Runaway Brain

How can you not love Mickey Mouse?

I had never seen this short until tonight, and had no idea where it was from or who was behind it. Here is the blurb on YouTube:

Runaway Brain is an Academy Award nominated 7-minute animated short-subject produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation Paris, and starring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. It was released on August 11, 1995 attached to the feature A Kid in King Arthur's Court and was re-released on July 16, 1997 in front of Disney's live-action remake of George of the Jungle. In international theaters, it was shown in front of A Goofy Movie.

So there you have it. It really has the old school Disney charm, yet at the same time feels very modern.

Man... I wish I could animate in 2D. Where's that magic genie machine from "Big" when you need it?

My Short Film - Polish 1

Here is the first polish pass of my short film for Animation Mentor. Please understand that the audio is not final, nor are a few of the transitions, and the scene has yet to be properly lit.

I've got a full quarter to get this sucker up to a final polish level, so any suggestions/comments/feedback you have is greatly appreciated! You can leave a comment or drop me an email (davesj at gmail dot com) and let me know what you think!

Who hasn't always wanted their own blob?

I once had a wad... but it wasn't nearly as cool as my friends' blobs. It was all my parents could afford.

Horton Heard the Rule of Thirds

You guys have to swing over to Virgilio Vasconcelos' blog and check out his most recent post on "Horton Hears a Who."

He breaks down a ton of shots like the one above and explains why, in almost every scene, there was a lot more going on than you might realize on a concious level. It's well worth a read, and yet another reason why "Horton" turned out to be so dang amazing.

Check it out!

Simply amazing!

I'll just go on record as saying that elephants in general are awesome, but elephants who can draw are out of this world!

I do feel a bit jealous though, since that pachyderm can actually draw better than I can. Someone get that elephant a Cintique!

30 Days of Water

I've embarked on a bit of an experiment this month...

There was a time in my life when I drank no caffeine at all. I consumed a bit in chocolate now and then, but for the most part, I was caffeine free. Then about 2 years ago, I discovered what I believe to be a nectar so sweet it must be squeezed from the heavens above.

I'm of course referring to energy drinks.

My drink of choice was Full Throttle, though in recent weeks it switched to the wonderful new selection of flavors from Mountain Dew. I drank 1-3 of these things a day, and I was loving life! Running about all jacked up on cafeine and sugar, I had nary a care in the world.

However, the oddest thing happened... the waistline of my pants started shrinking! It was a tough thing to admit, but since my diet hadn't changed, and I still attended my local gym at least 3 times a week, I could only point to that very nectar which I held so dear to my heart.

So for 30 days I'm giving it up. Along with that, I'm giving up every other liquid (outside of a splash of milk on an occasional bowl of cereal here or there), and I'm drinking nothing but water.

Yesterday was my first day of 30, and it was ROUGH! I had headaches, felt a bit sick to my stomach, and could almost hear the energy drinks calling me from the supermarket down the street.

We shall see if I make it or not, but I'm going to do my best. My hope is that if I make it 30 days, I'll have completely lost the cravings for the delicious energy drinks and never return. However their siren song is strong, and I am but one weak man...

Only time will tell.
